Episode 27: Slither

27 Slither

We asked, you answered! The audience choice movie this month is Slither!! October had an extra week this month so we tossed the option over to you guys and your top choice was James Gunn’s Slither. Starring Elizabeth Banks, Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion and Greg Henry, this science fiction, horror comedy was mostly a fun watch for us! Although of course, Randy had some differing opinions. Listen along to see what we had to see about this movie.

As usual, since this is the last week of the month, we gave away our awards this episode. We discussed the Alien Parasite theme overall and gave away Best Cinematography, Performance, Screenplay, and Film. We gave away an extra special award for this month and you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out what it is!

Okay guys, now that this is our second horror-comedy movie on the podcast, we need to decide on a combo word for the genre. Everyone knows there’s rom-com and dramedy, but we think horror comedy deserves its own snappy nickname. Homedy? Corror? Those just don’t seem good enough. Episode 26: The Faculty

25 The Faculty

The cast of this movie is so weird, guys. Usher, Josh Hartnett, Jordana Brewster, and Elijah wood are all in the same movie?  Also Clea Duvall, Laura Harris, Salma Hayek, Famke Janssen, Piper Laurie, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Patrick, Christopher McDonald, and JOHN STEWART. What is this movie. I know that’s a lot of names to throw at you, but I feel like it’s important to start to understand the strangeness of this movie.

This ended up being a great pick for us this month, so many references to other alien parasite movies here! So if you have been keeping up with this month you’ll notice and especially enjoy those.

Directed by the great Robert Rodriguez “Students suspect that their teachers are aliens after bizarre occurrences.”

Watch this movie along with us this week and comment below who your favorite faculty member was!

Also make sure you listen until the end of the episode where we announce what the audience choice movie will be for next week to finish off our alien parasite month!

Episode 25: The Thing

26 The Thing

Ahh, The Thing, a classic! We watched the first one from 1982 this time. This month we are finally getting in to some of the older movies that have influenced today’s filmmakers and we couldn’t pass up doing The Thing for an alien parasite theme!

Kurt Russell and that hair. A reason alone to watch this movie. Aside from that, the tension this movie builds is a great lesson in screenwriting, the beautiful set design and desolate location of the arctic are a thing to behold, and the acting is just enjoyable. All the actors are giving great performances here too. And all that’s not to even mention the great practical special effects to be seen in this film on top of the mystery laced so expertly throughout! Is he the thing? Is he? Is that? Are YOU?

Listen along with us as we review this film for the week! Directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, and Keith David (among others).

“A research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.”

Comment below and tell us what you thought of Tom Hardy’s American accent! Also that post credits scene….that wig….what….whyyyy.

Episode 22: Iron Man

22 Iron Man

For our final movie for the Actor Turned Director theme, we watched the movie that started it all, Iron Man. Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges. “After being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil.”

In this episode we talk about Iron Man of course, but we also get into some discussion on the other Marvel movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. Should it keep going? Is it time to stop? Could anyone else have pulled off such a strong beginning for the Marvel characters? Was Robert Downey Jr simply born to play this part?

This is our last movie for this theme so we have our awards discussion near the end of this episode. We compare the movies from this month and each decide a winner for Best Performance, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Film.

Comment below or email us to tell us who you would give the each award to and what you thought of this month’s theme!

Also listen to the end to find out our theme for next month and what movie we are watching next!

Episode 21: The Predator

Predator app (screen grab) CR: 20th Century Fox

Our theatre release film for this month is The Predator! Directed by Hawkins from the first Predator film, Shane Black, this film follows, you guessed it…a group of people fighting the predator. “When a young boy accidentally triggers the universe’s most lethal hunters’ return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.”

It got slightly heated this week’s episode, as some of our hosts had very strong opinions about the movie!

Starring Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan Michael Key, Thomas Jane, and Sterling K. Brown. So watch along with us and tell us if you think this star studded cast and Shane Black created a worthwhile installment in the Predator franchise! And try to avoid the internet in general if you want to go in with no expectations.

Episode 20: Unbroken

19 Unbroken

We watched Unbroken directed by Angelina Jolie. Written by the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen, and starring Jack O’Connell, Domhnall Gleeson, Miyavi, and Finn Wittrock it’s hard not to go into this movie with high expectations. And some of the film’s aspects live up to those expectations, others….not so much. “After a near-fatal plane crash in WWII, Olympian Louis Zamperini spends a harrowing 47 days in a raft with two fellow crewmen before he’s caught by the Japanese navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.”

Tune in to listen to us discuss this film, we disagreed this week on our judgments of it and it makes for some interesting talk!

18a Get Out

Here it is! I know you guys have been waiting with bated breath for Part 2! (Especially after that interesting edit by Randy that cut us off in the middle of a sentence….) We get more into our discussion about society and the racial issues this film tries to tackle. It all makes for some really interesting conversation I think you guys will enjoy.

We’d love to hear what you guys think of this conversation and how the film approaches these issues, please comment below to let us know what you think!
